Growing Cities
As of 2010 more than half the world's population has lived in cities, a proportion of that continues to grow and many of the world's cities are growing rapidly to accommodate that increase. The Growing Cities Research Cluster will promote research that considers:
- The impact of that growth
- The shape it takes at various scales (global - national/state - metropolitan - neighbourhood)
- The economic, political, social and environmental factors which shape it
- Implications for its stakeholders, particular in relation to governance and development fields.
Our location in Western Australia provides a pertinent case study in relation to these issues, with Perth's population projected to double by 2056, and the emergence of new regional cities in the north. However, the cluster's focus will not be limited to WA. Our members also have research links across Australia and the rest of the Asian region where some of the world's fastest growing cities are located as well as in Europe and the USA.
